Small Muscle Movement and Dexterity
Lefty or Righty? Only Time Will Tell!
An interesting development happens around 18-24 months: your child may start showing his true hand preference! Up until now, he may have used both right and left hands equally in all fine motor activities. However, as he has been building strong brain connections through cross-the-midline activities (e.g. activities that support the coordination of movement and action between both sides of his body), he will most likely develop a dominant hand which he will come to use more often than the other. In fact, research indicates that crossing the midline is important in the development of handedness. So be sure to support these types of two-handed activities to build his fine motor abilities.
