By three years old, most toddlers can produce simple, 3-4 word sentences, such as "Doggie go out." By four years old, however, your child may be able to tell you a whole story about his afternoon at Grandma's house, using more complex sentences as his understanding of the different parts of speech grows. Not that he understands them consciously! That is one of the amazing things about language, that our children can simply pick up on complicated parts of speech that would challenge us as adults.
