Figuring Out Who I Am: Developing Self-Concept in the Preschool Years

Preschoolers are at a stage where they are developing their self-concept, their idea of who they are as their own separate person. Part of this is reflected in their preferences, their likes and dislikes, of different things such as food, books, stories, and more. It is one way of telling the world, and affirming with themselves, who they are. Don't be concerned if your child's preferences seem to change weekly, or even daily! At this age, some children can be quite passionate about their likes and dislikes, in part because they are still discovering new things about the world.

Has your child achieved the following Self-Concept developmental milestones yet? If yes, check off all of the skill(s) he has already mastered to date.
