The Joys of Writing: How Scribbles Are Leading to Letters

Your child has likely been scribbling for a while, and those scribbles have become more and more controlled, perhaps starting to look like shapes. He may enjoy playing games that involve writing, such as sending a postcard, making a shopping list, or taking a restaurant order. All this writing practice has been leading up to actual writing, and your child will soon start to copy some capital letters, especially the ones in his name. Some kids reach this milestone around their third birthday, but many pick up this skill some time before their fourth or even fifth birthday.

Has your child achieved the following Early Writing milestones yet? If yes, check off all of the skill(s) he has already mastered to date.
