Physical Play Keeps Tantrums Away
Remember your toddler’s last tantrum. It may have been set off by the most innocuous request, like “Aiden, put on your coat.” Then heavy storm clouds start sweeping over your sunny, calm child, and before you know it, a full blown hurricane hits: his body goes limp like wet spaghetti, he’s prone on the floor (most often in an inconvenient public space), and he’s caught in an uncontrollable kicking and screaming frenzy. Sound familiar? While there are many tips on how to manage your tot’s meltdowns, Dr. Laura Markham shares additional insight:
“Kids are more physical than adults. When they get wound up emotionally, their bodies need to discharge all that energy. That’s one of the reasons they have so much more energy than we do, so they wear us out.”
But we can use this to our advantage, because when we play physical games with children, they giggle and sweat and scream–and they release pent-up stress hormones positively instead of releasing them by having a tantrum.
