So your child’s a physical learner, a Busy Body Bill, now what? Here are the most frequently asked questions about the kinesthetic or tactile learning style we receive from parents. Keep in mind that being aware of your child’s strengths in a particular learning style does not mean he should be limited to specific activities or approaches to learning. Most children love to play, laugh, dance, and learn new things, regardless of their learning styles. So be sure to support a balanced approach to learning in order to give your little one a variety of opportunities to uncover his many talents and interests that will help him become the very best that he can be!

My physical learner tends to not sit still. Will my child’s teachers think he has a hyperactivity disorder?

Most likely not! Most teachers understand that hyperactivity disorders come with a host of symptoms that are typically displayed with more regularity and severity than a “kid on the go.” Further, a doctor must make a hyperactivity disorder diagnosis, not a teacher. Traditional classrooms can involve having to stay seated for long periods of time. If your child has difficulty sitting still for long stretches of time, consider speaking with your child’s teacher about finding solutions that will work for his needs when the time comes.

Can my little mover be successful with arts and crafts?

Absolutely! In fact, Busy Body Bills often have excellent body control, both for large and small muscle coordination. Your child might shine when working with art supplies, such as scissors and paint brushes, and may even use his hands to create 3-dimensional sculptures.

My child is struggling with math. Pictures don’t help him, and he can’t talk through problems. What can I do?

For physical learners, allowing them to use their hands and actively work through the math concepts would be highly recommended. Your child will most likely benefit from using manipulatives when practicing math concepts. Try giving him ample opportunities to physically move objects, manipulate counters, and clap out patterns while he learns. As a Busy Body Bill, it may be easier for him to use physical muscle memory to help him solidify math concepts.

How can I inspire my little mover?

Busy Body Bills live up to their name, so give him plenty of opportunities to move! Playing sports together is always a great option, but he may also enjoy banging on a pot and pan “drum set,” dancing in the living room on a rainy day, or digging for “treasure” with his hands in a sandbox. Don’t neglect those small muscle skills; stringing beads, working with clay, and painting can all help develop his fine motor co-ordination, not to mention help give him a more quiet activity to focus his attention on. You can also help develop his literacy skills by encouraging him to act out some of his favorite stories while you read.
