So Your Child is a Listening Ludwig, Now What??

[This is post is part of our “What Kind of Preschooler Do You Have?” quiz. To find out what kind of learner your child is, click here to take the quiz!] So your child’s a Listening Ludwig, now what? Here are the most frequently asked questions about the auditory learning style we receive from parents. Keep in mind that being aware of your child’s strengths in a particular learning style does not mean he should be limited to specific activities or approaches to learning. Most children love to play, laugh, dance, and learn new things, regardless of their learning styles. So be sure to support a balanced approach to learning in order to give your little one a variety of opportunities to uncover his many talents and interests that will help him become the very best that he can be!

If my child is a language lover and listener, does this mean that he may hate doing arts and crafts?

In the same way that a Listening Ludwig can “paint a picture” with words or music, they often appreciate visual art as well. Consider incorporating visual arts into his love of words and sounds. Try encouraging him to design his own album art cover, or create a colorful picture book together after he pens his masterpiece!

Is math definitely going to be difficult for my auditory learner?

Absolutely not. While many components of math involve analytical problem-solving skills, your child may still excel in this area. How? The fact that he can readily talk his way through word problems can actually lead him to many “aha!” moments and solutions. So when tackling challenging math concepts with your Listening Ludwig, consider illustrating the concepts through storytelling!

If my child is primarily interested in language arts and listening, should I pull him out of sports and put him into a writers’ workshop instead?

No! Your child may still be an all-star at sports. A Listening Ludwig can be incredibly skilled at responding to auditory directions. This means that he may have the innate ability to filter out his coach’s voice in a crowded arena and follow directions easily. Mix this skill with his ability to effectively communicate, and your child could become a major team player.

How might I inspire my little Listening Ludwig?

Words may be your child’s window to the world, so make your home a book haven! He may appreciate his own “language nook” where he can read or engage in creative writing. Your language lover and listener will most likely appreciate all of the sound effects, voices and music that accompany audio books, poems, and dramatic readings. He most likely also loves to communicate, so engage your child in rich conversation to stimulate his growing vocabulary and mind.
