Mastering the 1-2-3’s of Early Math
Your child is reaching an age of expanding mathematical understanding! Now that she is three years old, she is clearly becoming familiar with the idea of numbers and will begin to show off her early math skills. When reading counting books together, you will start to see her recognize written numbers and point them out to you. Knowing that numbers represent age, she may proudly tell you her age (whether or not it’s the correct age is another story!). She may even start holding up her fingers to show you her age or a quantity. Your child will also develop a greater ability to compare and contrast objects by now, such as telling you which of two objects are bigger or longer. But one of the most exciting developments during her fourth year will be her increasing ability to start counting small quantities, usually up to five. She may demonstrate this skill by counting how many crackers are on her plate or how many blocks are in a tower she just built.
Play Tips:
How can you support your child’s development of this Counting and One-to-One Correspondence skill at this age? It’s as easy as 1-2-3.
- Incorporate counting into play. Find different ways to make counting a part of your child’s play time. You could count as you push her on the swing or as she stacks blocks. You could also count how many steps it takes to go from Point A to Point B.
- Bring numbers with you to snack time. Numbers can also be a great part of snack time. Make a simple sign (no need to be too fancy, if you’re not very artistic) showing how many crackers your child can select, or how many cheese slices, how many carrot sticks, etc.
- Play a game of “Can you bring me…?” together. Send your child on little errands and ask her to bring you a small quantity of items. For example, ask her to pick out three books for story time or bring you five blocks to stack. At mealtime, ask her to pick out four potatoes for you to cook or to put five carrots in the pot.
