Does Your Child Know Her Name and Address? It’s Time to Learn!

Your child’s memory is quite good now, and one of the important things for her to remember at this age is her full name and address! This will be critical if she ever becomes lost or separated from you. Two other good things to teach her would be your name and home or cell phone number. Remind her to share this information with a trustworthy stranger, such as a police officer, if she ever gets lost. She can share your name and number with another stranger if she can’t find a police officer, but it’s important not to go anywhere with that person. Hopefully she will never need to use this information, but it will be a comfort to know that it’s stored in her memory, ready for retrieval!

Play Tips:

How can you support your child’s development of this Self-Concept skill at this age? It’s as easy as 1-2-3.

  1. Sing your address! Music and singing can be a great help to memory, so teach your child to sing your address to the tune of “Farmer in the Dell”:
    My name is ___ ___.
And this is where I live:
    House #, street name,
    City, state.
  2. Sing your phone number! “Frere Jacques” is quite good for phone numbers:
    987, 987,
    654, 654,
    3210, 3210,
That’s my number, that’s my number.
  3. Sort name and address! Write out your child’s name and the parts of your address on index cards: first name, last name, house #, street name, city, state. Demonstrate how to put them in the correct order, then mix them up and invite your child to give it a try. You can also do this with your phone number.
  4. Make your house. Make a 3D version of your house from an empty cereal box (cut and turned inside out) or a brown paper bag. Have your child decorate it to look like your house, and be sure to include the house number. Make a little street sign to go with it.
  5. Try a worksheet. The following site has free worksheets your child can use to practice her address and phone number: http://www.123teachwithme.com/2013/05/phone-number-and-address-practice.html.
