Let’s Sing! Three Ways to Bring Music and Song into Your Child’s Play
Do you often sing songs to your child or play music throughout the day? If so, you may start to hear your child sing some of his favorite songs from memory at this age. He may sing along with you, if you start the song, but he may also sing to himself as he plays. You might hear him work a song into his pretend play, such as singing his doll a lullaby. He may sing the birthday song to his toys, and if he’s feeling bold, he may even sing a song for a special friend or grandparent.

Play Tips:
How can you support your child’s development of this Music Appreciation and Creation skill at this age? It’s as easy as 1-2-3.
- Do fingerplays. If your child is struggling with singing a song from memory, try starting with songs that have actions that accompany the words. Combining songs with physical actions can help young children form memories, since it engages different areas of the brain.
- Listen to music actively. If your child isn’t as interested in singing, there are other ways to actively engage him in music. You can dance together to the beat of a song, or you can use some simple instruments to play along. Percussion instruments such as shakers, rhythm sticks, and drums are great because your child can focus on the beat without worrying about the notes.
- Make your home a musical one. Create a musical home by playing music often throughout the day. There are times when you’ll want to actively engage in the music, but it also makes a great background to many activities. Don’t worry about the specific style of music. This is a good way to introduce your child to a variety of styles, especially the ones you love.
